Shirin Neshat: Body of Evidence
This is the first major solo exhibition in Italy of Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Art Biennale in 1999, the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2009, and the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo in 2017. The exhibition spans more than 30 years of Neshat’s career, featuring nearly 200 photographs and ten video installations, collected by some of the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA, the Guggenheim in New York, and Tate Modern.
Neshat interprets both the history and present of her homeland, Iran, and the wider world through a female perspective. From her early 1990s series Women of Allah, featuring photographs of women with poetic calligraphy inscribed on their bodies, to The Fury, a video installation that anticipates the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, her work delves deep into social and political issues. However, Neshat’s exploration goes beyond gender, using male/female dualism as a starting point to examine themes of belonging and exile, sanity and madness, dream and reality.
