Silvia Bächli: Lines are telling stories
For her fifth exhibition at the gallery, Swiss artist Silvia Bächli continues her exploration of fundamental drawing elements—surface, line, color, and brushstroke—that she began in the late 1970s.
While each choice is distinctive for the artist, these elements find renewed definition with every new sheet of paper, guiding the viewer through her rhythm of reality. At the Via Stradella 1 and 4 spaces, Bächli presents a selection of works from 2006 onward, including recent pieces. Red brushstrokes in Untitled (2011) and Spine 2 (2023) interweave with the solid color fields of the Farbfeld series, touching hues of brown, brick, and deep blue. Like words or single notes, these works exist within a composition that develops slowly and carefully, finding their voice. In Bächli’s work, as brushstrokes extend beyond the paper’s edge, the gesture surpasses formality—it’s an act of discovery, starting with a memory impression, testing the paper’s borders, and concluding. Through a consistent language, Bächli meticulously explores the two-dimensional surface, inviting the viewer to not only observe but engage with the brushstrokes, fills, colors, and the empty spaces that emerge within. This exhibition is parallel to a special project by the artist at the Morandi Museum in Bologna (January 21 – May 18, 2025), where five Farbfeld works interact with late still lifes by Morandi, creating a dialogue between the artist’s palette and Morandi’s unique tones.
