Slitscape. Pictures by Claudio Sinatti

Museo del Novecento, Piazza Duomo, 8, Milan, Italy

Slitscape – curated by Cesare Cicardini – explores the photographic work produced between 2012 and 2013 by Sinatti who, throughout his career, experimented and investigated new languages, from net image to music, from street art to photography.

Claudio Sinatti, writer, video maker, and pioneer of video mapping, who died prematurely in 2014, was one of the protagonists of Milan’s underground scenario in the 1990’s. Slitscape features 27 images taken by the artist around different locations in Milan, his hometown, and the rest of the world, from Dubai to New York City, using the slit-scan photography technique, which consists in a photographic shooting based upon the camera’s movement combined with a long exposure time, which is then processed with a software. The result is not the static representation of a place, but the two-dimensional restitution of a trajectory through space and time. Sinatti approaches photography as a complete and final artistic medium: if, on the one hand, the long frames reproduced in the photos are true maps that can be read as a round-trip journey, on the aesthetic level they bring to mind a lyrical reproduction of an electronic image. With Slitscape, Sinatti becomes a voyager in space able to probe beyond the surface, beyond material, exploring the depths of time. On display, along with a selection from the over two hundred photographs from the archives, are three videos produced in partnership with outstanding composers and musicians: Gardening (2000), A Shaved Mint (2007), and Canzone di Sabbia (2012).

Luca Barcellona, an internationally renowned calligrapher, pays homage to his friend Claudio Sinatti with site-specific lettering interventions and with the production of a brand new work in a dialogue with Slitscape views.
