Tarek Atoui: Improvisation in 10 Days

Borrowing a specific term from the lexicon of music, Atoui explores the potential of composition in space, bringing the material, sculptural, architectural, and relational qualities of the works into dialogue with the immaterial nature of sound and its reverberation through bodies and objects. Using the Shed as a vast blank canvas, the artist rearranges and recomposes works from one of his previous exhibitions, drawing on the identity of the space (a place of production) and the temporal coordinates (the days on which the artist will set up the exhibition) to “improvise” movements, harmonies, and tunings, thereby creating a collective experience within a sonic environment.

This marks the first time Atoui has conceived an exhibition as a dynamic entity, capable of evolving and materialising over time in response to its context. The true potential of the project lies in its “dynamic” nature—its openness to chance.
