The Subject Matters
The exhibition is a group exhibition curated by Luca Fiore, exploring the power of photography when depicting ordinary, minimal subjects. Featuring 48 works by five photographers—Guido Guidi, Gerry Johansson, Takashi Homma, Terri Weifenbach, and Vanessa Winship—the exhibition spans works from 1992 to 2023. Inspired by the 17th-century hierarchy of pictorial genres, the show focuses on subjects once deemed less prestigious, like landscapes and still lifes. Photography, evolving in the 20th century, shifted from historical storytelling to capturing the poetic power of the ordinary. The exhibition reflects on how photography elevates the mundane, transforming it into something extraordinary. Through diverse techniques and perspectives, the works explore distant geographies, nature, and urban landscapes, demonstrating photography’s ability to highlight overlooked subjects.
