The Unexpected Subject: 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy

Via G.B. Piranesi 10, Milan, Italy

The exhibition conducts for the first time an exhaustive investigation into the relationships between visual arts and feminist movement in Italy, with a focus on the year 1978, recognised as fundamental in the women’s s claim of their roles in the art field.

“The Unexpected Subject: 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy” highlights the centrality of women in the artistic scene of the period in Italy and beyond, criticizing the main view which relegates them to marginal roles. The pieces on view, on loan from private collections, public institutions and artists’ archives, defy gender stereotypes. They are accompanied by a selection of materials linked to feminist movements like posters, photographs and more, documenting the history of women’s struggle for their rights.
