William Kentridge: Waiting for the Sibyl and Other Histories

The exhibition at Lia Rumma, Milan, consolidates the artist's 20-year-long relationship with the gallery and the Italian country

Lia Rumma, Milan, Via Stilicone 19, 20154, Milan, Italy

The new project by the South-African artist William Kentridge evokes the mythological Sibyl: the priestess used to write down her oracles on oak leaves, then left to wander in the wind. Inspired by the moving artworks by Alexander Calder, Kentridge references the destiny of Sibyl’s predictions, flying around in the wind, blending and confusing the men’s destinies.

“Waiting for the Sibyl and Other Histories” was commissioned by the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, where the work premiered alongside “Work in Progress” (1968), the only theatrical work by the USA sculptor Alexander Calder.
