Depero Futurist and Global Artist

The Contemporary Art Museum of USP and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura of São Paulo (IIC) feature, from January 30 at 11 am, the exhibition Depero Futurist and Global Artist, which brings to Brazil for the first time a significant number of Italian artist works Fortunato Depero (1892- 1960), one of the biggest names in Motion Futuristic and precursor of Pop Art. The curator Maurizio Scudiero, architect and historian of modern art, explains the selected 65 works of Depero to “document the creative verve of this great artist, who had a gift for migrate with absolute ease screens for fabric or colored paper collages in “.

The exhibition is part of the Year of Italy in Latin America, organized by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura of São Paulo, the official promotion of the Italian language and culture in Brazil. After São Paulo, where it remains in MAC USP Ibirapuera until March 27, the show will go to Lima, Peru. In Brazil, the exhibition has the support of Alitalia airline.

Fortunato Depero worked intensely as a painter and graphic designer (is responsible for the signs of a famous liquor brand). Born in northern Italy in the town of Rovereto, near Trento, the artist joined the Futurist movement in 1914 and it engaged throughout his career. In 1915, he launched alongside Giacomo Balla the Futurist manifesto, defending the notion of total work of art: modern man surrounded by objects. The Casa d’Arte (home-studio-factory), turned into a museum in 1957 and located in his hometown, is proof of his intense artistic production, understood by him in an expanded field.

The importance of the exhibition is also highlighted by Ana Magalhães, professor and curator of MAC USP, noting that “the verve of Depero businessman is known and has been revised by the latest historiography on the Italian futurism. His advertising posters have gained new status and must be interpreted in the light of the relationship between modern art and the mass media. “
