Antonio Calderara: The Double

Lisson Gallery, 10th Avenue, 138 10th Avenue

Italian Modernist painter Antonio Calderara is protagonist for the first time of a solo exhibition in a New York gallery. The show spans his career starting from the 1940s, when he turned away from traditional figuration to embrace an original style marked by a lyrical abstraction. This new style, inspired by the Metaphysical movement of Giorgio de Chirico and other artists based in Milan such as Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni, is marked by the constant doubling or mirroring of forms inside the paintings. This visual vocabulary places Calderara besides other Modernist painters of the time, like Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers.
The show is not organised chronologically, to highlight deliberately the constant references and returns throughout his artistic practice, through the juxtaposition of works from different periods.
