Brave, Beautiful Outlaws: The Photographs of Donna Gottschalk

Leslie-Lohman Museum, 26 Wooster Street

The exhibition is dedicated to the photographic work of Donna Gottschalk, who was active on the scene of gay rights claims in New York and California during the 1970s. In her work, she documented the early period of radical lesbian organisations: coming out as a lesbian just during the formation of the radical lesbians and Furies collectives on the east coast, she came in contact with some artists, representatives of the movements. She kept documenting this reality even when she moved to California to join lesbian-separatist communities.

“Brave, Beautiful Outlaws: The Photographs of Donna Gottschalk” features pictures of herself, friends, lovers and activists in radical lesbian communities, besides the ones in which she documented the life of her brother, who transitioned to become a woman.
