David Wojnarowicz: History Keeps Me Awake at Night
Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort Street
David Wojnarowicz worked exploring photography, painting, music, film, sculpture, writing, and activism, refusing to choose a signature style and adopting instead a wide variety of techniques. In particular, he came to prominence in New York in the 1980s, a period marked by creative energy and financial precariousness, crossed by the most different art movements, graffiti, new and no wave music, conceptual photography, performance, and neo-expressionist painting.
The true subjects of his research was the outsider figure; in his work he documents the tragic period of AIDS crisis and culture wars of the late 1980s and early 1990s, dealing at the same time with the timeless topics of sex, spirituality, love, and loss.
