Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures

The first major solo exhibition dedicated to the artists at MoMA in 50 years

Museum of Modern Art – MoMA, 11 West 53 Street, Manhattan, New York, USA

The major retrospective dedicated to the photographer Dorothea Lange at MoMA includes around 100 photographs drawn entirely from the Museum’s collection. The selection spans Lange’s career, featuring both iconic and lesser-known pictures to present a fresh point on view on her photographic research. New perspectives by artists, scholars, critics, and writers examine how words influence our perception of her work. The exhibition path ranges from her photo-essays published in LIFE magazine to her examination of the US criminal justice system, and her most iconic portrait “Migrant Mother” (1936) from the 1930s series documenting the condition of displaced families and migrant workers during the Great Depression.
