Georg Baselitz: Devotion

“Devotion” features new painting and works on paper by Georg Baselitz, hosted at Gagosian West 24th Street, New York. The pieces on view highlight the interest of the artist, considered a pioneer of Neo-Expressionism, for portraiture, arisen from his fascination with memory and its inconsistencies.
His painting is characterised by raw gestures, a powerful emotional charge and a renewed centrality of figure. Baselitz works by reinterpreting artistic precedents, including his own, in strict dialogue with images from the past.

The exhibition at Gagosian gathers the monumental heads which portray significant figures such as Frank Auerbach, Cecily Brown, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Otto Dix, Nicole Eisenman, Tracey Emin, Philip Guston, Erich Heckel, Joan Mitchell, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Arnold Schoenberg, Clyfford Still, Andy Warhol, and others.
