Jane and Louise Wilson: Stasi City

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

“Stasi City” (1997) by Jane and Louise Wilson, on view at The Met Fifth Avenue, is considered one of the most important works of video art of the last half century. The four-channel video was produced by the two during their fellowship in Berlin in 1996 to record the site of the former headquarters of the East German secret police, hosted inside some bland buildings in the old East Berlin. The video provides viewers with the immersive and theatrical experience of a tour inside these abandoned spaces.
