Lubaina Himid: Work from Underneath

New Museum, 235 Bowery

Turner Prize–winning British artist Lubaina Himid is having her first solo show in the US at the New Museum. In her practice, the artist explores issues of colonialism and question the invisibility of people of color in art and the media.  With the sculptures, paintings, textiles, and sound works that compose the exhibition, Himid examines how language and architecture generate a sense of danger or safety, fragility, or stability.

Lubaina Himid (b. Zanzibar, Tanzania, in 1954) lives and works in Preston, UK, where she is professor of contemporary art at the University of Central Lancashire.
