Martha Rosler: Irrespective
The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Ave at 92nd St
“Irrespective” features works by one of the most influential American artists of her generation, namely Martha Rosler. The exhibition is the first overview dedicated to the artist in the US in the last 20 years and gathers both iconic pieces, such as the Conceptual art landmark “The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems” (1974-75), and rarely seen installations.
Rosler’s striking pieces aim to formulate a singular critique of contemporary society, inspired by the strong faith of the artist in the powerful role of art as a vehicle of social change. Rosler analyses mass media, social history, and daily experience, proposing open-ended solutions to trigger critical reflection in her audiences.
