Others tell the story differently

Rubber Factory‘s inaugural show provides a preview of what lies ahead by exhibiting work from the 6 artists who will have solo shows in the next 6 months. It is also a chance for the pieces to be viewed in conversation with one another; comparing approaches to portraiture, architecture, chemical processes and ways of knowing in order to animate a conversation around the conceptual base for each artist.

The gallery’s curatorial vision revolves around contemporary photographic practices and seeks to make visible the processes which underpin the making of the work. As photography becomes ever more expansive and fragmentary as an ecosystem, there is also an unprecedented interest from the public to understand the language and potentialities of the photograph. How do we develop visual literacy within the community and its stakeholders while encouraging artists to experiment with the most honest iterations of their ideas? These are the tensions which occupy the mission statement of Rubber Factory.

“Others tell the story differently. The world cannot contain two things that are identical; no sooner, they say, had the poet uttered his poem than the palace disappeared, as though in a puff of smoke, wiped from the face of the earth by the final syllable.”       Jorge Luis Borges, Parable of the Palace.
