Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment
Peter Saul (b. 1934, San Francisco, CA) one of America’s boldest and most iconoclastic painters.
New Museum hosts the artist’s first museum survey in New York, bringing together approximately sixty paintings from across Peter Saul’s long and prolific career on the margins.
Beginning in the early 1960s, Peter Saul began to incorporate imagery borrowed from a range of pop-cultural sources into his brightly coloured paintings, adopting a style ahead of its time. His work developed independently from concurrent art historical movements, instead Saul has crafted his own unique blend of Surrealism, history painting, vernacular illustration, and the real-life terror of current events. As an outsider to the narrative of twentieth-century art he is very much admired by the younger artists of today with his work which proves to be a perfect expression of our terrifying present.
