The Sublime and the Center: Dimensions of Landscape

Marlborough New York, 40 West 57th Street

The Sublime and the Center: Dimensions of Landscape, an exhibition of new work byPaula Crown. It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York. An opening reception will be held at the gallery from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday,

The Sublime and the Center: Dimensions of Landscape features new paintings and sculptural work from Crown’s PERforations and Fractals, which are part of her ‘Africa Series.’ The show also includes new works entitled Alphabravo, Bearings Down and DISoriental. Combining a painterly and geometric intuition, the artist materially and dimensionally explores

The Africa Series is rooted in the tradition of indexical drawing. The original sketches were made while flying in a helicopter moving through time and space.

The motion of the hand, directed by thought and influenced by the environment, leaves physical records on the sketchbook pages. Through a bold extrapolation of the medium, the ink drawings have been scanned, rotated, expanded, and contracted by Crown. They are then altered through complex 2D and 3D processes and are alchemically realized in a range of materials: from marble to

As the border between the analog and digital becomes increasingly porous, Crown considers new formats in which the two systems can coexist. The centerpiece of the exhibit stands as a map of itself. A 14 foot by 20 foot expansive surface, it represents a portion of an original drawing magnified by several thousand times. Even with landscape as a reference, this optical speculation creates relational uncertainty for the viewer. Employing advanced tools of technology, Crown fluidly transforms actual space. Locations are untethered from their traditional coordinates and new forms are conceived. This new reality contextualizes drawing in an expanded perceptual field, fusing painting, printing, and sculpture within the exhibition.
