Yto Barrada: Paste Papers

The site-specific installation “Paste Papers”, by Yto Barrada, is presented as part of the inaugural program of Pace Gallery’s global headquarter opening in New York.

Pace Gallery, 540 West 25th Street, New York

Inspired by designs that the artist discovered in the endpapers of books within the library of the late architect Luis Barragán at his home in Mexico City, Barrada created a wallpaper that covers the entire south wall of the 10,000 volume research library on the first floor.

Moreover, the exhibition includes a series of works that influences Barrada’s special commission for Pace, realised with the techniques of paste parer. Deviating from the traditional techniques, Barranda’s wallpaper sacrifice precision in favour of spontaneity, involving friends, kids and collaborators in the process.

Yto Barrada is recognized for her multidisciplinary investigations of cultural phenomena, with a focus on Morocco. Grounded in documentary photography, her practice also encompasses other media (e.g. film, sculpture, painting, printmaking and others). Moved by socio‐political concerns, Barrada’s interests range from the tensions around borders, immigration, and tourism to the urban landscape, portrayed always indirectly, avoiding reportage of dramatic events.
