No Man’s Land

“No Man’s Land” is an unoccupied territory, a territory disputed by many factions, left there by a state of fear or uncertainty. No Man’s Land lies between regimes in a constant power struggle. At the RS9, this generic title will bring together ten exhibitions produced for the extended 10th edition of the “White Night of the Art Galleries”, which will take place in Arad, Baia Mare, Brașov, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sibiu, Târgu Mureș and Timișoara. The presence in the same territory of ten different exhibitions, proposed by ten different curators, each built around a different concept, will generate, through their randomized positioning, both conflict and harmony.

One room will be left empty – a transit area between the exhibition spaces, an unclaimed territory, a meeting point for dialogue and debate. No Man’s Land defines and justifies this space, in which curators independently develop a representative statement for the cities they represent, shaping an unexpected path in the house’s labyrinth.

Scena9 Residence, a historical monument located on 32 Ion Luca Caragiale Street was built in 1890, belonged to King Mihai and was also a gift of King Ferdinand to Queen Mary. In the future, BRD – Groupe Société Générale, main partner for The White Night of the Art Galleries, plans to transform it into a cultural-artistic space, open to the new generations of creators.

The opening of the exhibition “No Man’s Land” / Ten curatorial discourses on Romanian contemporary art marks the start of NAG#10 in Bucharest, on September 30th, 7pm, at Scena9 Residence. The project, produced by Ephemair Association exclusively for the White Night of the Art Galleries, consists in the presence in the same territory of ten different exhibitions, generating through their random display both conflict and harmony in the discourses proposed by the curators invited to highlight the cultural profile of NAG 2016 participant cities.
