Maria Iorio/Raphaël Cuomo: Cronache di quel tempo
The exhibition is organised by Istituto Svizzero
The video works and installations by artist duo Maria Iorio / Raphaël Cuomo are the result of a long-term research on themes of migration, movements of people and the significance of borders. In their practice, the artists question the unheard and forgotten stories that migrants carry with them.
Cronache di quel tempo (‘Chronicles of that time’) is a one-hour video and a site-specific installation. Its focus lies on the Mediterranean region, the fragile border area between Europe and Africa which has in recent years become the geopolitical focus of European refugee policy, thus in many ways linked to Sicily, Palermo and the exhibition site.
The video traces the voices and protagonists of the past and takes its viewers to Porto Empedocle on the coast of Sicily, Lampedusa and Tunisia. The temporal dimension is also relevant here: Cronache di quel tempo explores to what extent the significance of the Mediterranean has changed over the last fifteen years, what impact the harsh European border regime had on this development and how quickly stories are forgotten.
The exhibition is open to the public, by signing-up. Different time slots are available in order to avoid gatherings.
