Anish Kapoor
Born in Mumbai, Anish Kapoor is one of the most significant figures in contemporary sculpture. Throughout his career, Kapoor has explored the relationship between form and void, presence and absence, surface and depth, and perception and illusion. Working across a remarkable range of scales and materials—including stone, stainless steel, wax, pigment, PVC and mirrors—he creates works that challenge our understanding of space and encourage us to question what we see. Geometric and biomorphic forms frequently appear to emerge from, or disappear into, their surroundings.
The idea of the void is central to Kapoor's practice. Rather than treating emptiness simply as an absence, he approaches it as something tangible and psychologically charged. His sculptures often transform empty space into something that seems almost material, inviting the viewer to experience the boundary between something and nothing.
Kapoor is equally interested in the physical and perceptual qualities of materials. His highly polished stainless-steel sculptures reflect and distort their surroundings, while intensely coloured pigment works can appear almost weightless or detached from their material origins. Concave and convex surfaces create optical effects that disrupt scale and perspective, making the viewer an active participant in the work.
