Avant-Garde(s) including Thinking Italian
Artists: Yves Klein, Alberto Giacometti, Pierre Soulages, Joan Mitchell, Sam Francis, Nicolas de Staël, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Jean Hans Arp, André Masson, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Jannis Kounellis, Alighiero Boetti, Lucio Fontana, Maurizio Cattelan, Arnaldo Pomodoro, François-Xavier Lalanne, and more.
On October 23, the prestigious “Avant-Garde(s) including Thinking Italian” evening sale will once again celebrate the leading figures of 20th and 21st-century art. Featuring around sixty exceptional works by major modern, post-war, and contemporary artists — including a museum-quality painting by Yves Klein — the sale is headlined by standout pieces from Alberto Giacometti, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Max Ernst, Jean Hans Arp, Joan Miró, Pierre Soulages, Joan Mitchell, Jean Dubuffet, Sam Francis, Nicolas de Staël, and more.
Among the highlights is “California” (IKB 71) — the largest Yves Klein monochrome in private hands, offered at auction for the very first time. With its more than four-meter length, this monumental work embodies the culmination of the artist’s exploration of International Klein Blue. Returning to the city where it was originally created, it ranks among the most significant works by Yves Klein ever to appear on the market.
Another major highlight is “Femme debout“ by Alberto Giacometti — an exceptional rediscovery from a Parisian private collection, where it has been carefully preserved for over fifty years. This rare sculpture is known only through another example held by the Fondation Alberto Giacometti, underscoring its historical and artistic importance.
Now in its fourth edition, the “Thinking Italian” section will shine a spotlight on key Italian artists of the 20th century, with works by Alighiero Boetti, Giovanni Anselmo, Maurizio Cattelan, Arnaldo Pomodoro, and Lucio Fontana. This year’s selection also includes important pieces from the visionary Alessandro Grassi Collection, presented as part of an international series of sales taking place this autumn across London, Paris, and New York.
