Bianca Argimón: Fake It Until You Lose It

Barouh’s work is profoundly connected to her personal history and to a desire driven as much by intuition as by necessity: the impulse to seek out and engage with cultures to which she feels at once intimately connected and curiously distant. This dual movement—of proximity and estrangement—has shaped her practice from its beginnings, giving it both its openness and its restlessness. Raised in a multicultural and binational environment, she quickly became aware that her sense of identity would not be built through inheritance alone, but through a continuous process of discovery and confrontation with the unfamiliar. For her, cultural practices encountered in the public sphere—whether through deliberate exploration or unexpected chance—become opportunities for learning, reflection, and reinvention. Often these encounters spark connections strong enough to form new networks of belonging, allowing her to compose what she describes as new “families”, beyond the limits of geography, language, or tradition. This way of working is not simply about collecting influences but about weaving together fragments of lived experience, gestures, and symbols into a practice that remains fluid, porous, and deeply human. In this ongoing process, Barouh’s art reflects both the vulnerability and the richness of building oneself in dialogue with others, always moving between what is inherited and what is chosen, what is near and what remains just out of reach.
