Daisuke Fukunaga
Crèvecœur presents Daisuke Fukunaga’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, bringing together a new body of paintings that considers the subtle temporalities of everyday life.
The cadence of daily life is shaped by interruptions: journeys, waiting, tasks and notifications divide time into a succession of sequences that influences how attention is directed. Against this fragmentation, the exhibition considers forms of looking that allow moments to unfold more slowly.
Working primarily from memory and sketches, Fukunaga is interested in the quiet theatricality of everyday life. His paintings often depict figures engaged in contemporary forms of labour, focusing not only on gestures of production but also on the intervals between them: pauses, contemplation, walking and waiting. During these moments, objects, landscapes and ordinary presences become more visible.
Labour occupies a central position in this body of work, not as an explicit subject but as a context from which moments of rest emerge. Sleeping workers, for example, appear with helmet lamps still switched on, their beams of light extending across dormant bodies.
The paintings consider how attention might persist within the fragmented rhythms of contemporary life. Through scenes drawn from ordinary experience, the works create spaces in which time, observation and memory intersect.
