Éternel Tintoret

Musée Jacquemart-André, 158 Bd Haussmann, 75008 Paris, France

The Musée Jacquemart-André presents the work of one of the leading figures of Italian Mannerism, Jacomo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (1518/19–1594). For the first time in France, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Tintoretto’s career, highlighting how his artistic legacy transcended temporal and geographical boundaries and established him as a key influence on 19th-century French painting.

Emphasising the modernity of his art, the exhibition reveals the singularity of an artist endowed with extraordinary creative energy, whom Vasari described in 1568 as ‘the most formidable mind that painting has ever known’. A complex artist who defies categorisation, Tintoretto produced a body of work that has been equally admired and controversial, characterised by bold compositions, dizzying perspectives, spectacular lighting effects and rapid, vigorous brushstrokes – the celebrated prestezza.

Bringing together around forty paintings and works on paper from public and private collections in France, Italy and elsewhere, the exhibition allows visitors to appreciate the diversity and breadth of Tintoretto’s oeuvre through a number of key themes.
