From Sea to Sky
A dialogue between the works of three different collectives, the multimedia installation “From Sea to Sky” highlights the transformation of the Mediterranean maritime space into a militarised border zone.
From sea to sky, surveillance methods in the Mediterranean have significantly evolved, driven largely by Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Maritime patrols have been largely replaced by a vast arsenal of aerial surveillance, with private fleets of planes and drones increasingly used to push back migrants. From Sea to Sky sheds light on this shift, using data and image analysis. Designed for the Centquatre and the Festival d’Automne, the installation features video works, sound pieces, multimedia, and cartographic works.
From Sea to Sky exposes the aggressive methods deployed at sea through the complementary approaches of three activist collectives: LIMINAL (a laboratory investigating border violence), Border Forensics (an organisation examining such violence using spatial and visual analyses), and Forensic Oceanography. The latter focuses particularly on the EU’s maritime borders in the Mediterranean, where more than 40,000 migrants have died over the past 30 years, victims of what Forensic Oceanography calls “liquid violence”.
