June Crespo: Rose Trraction

“Rose Trraction” is the first solo exhibition in France by Basque artist June Crespo. Her work, partly inscribed in the tradition of contemporary Basque sculpture, is grounded in the friction of materials and the expressive possibilities that arise from it. The exhibition largely brings together works created specifically for her presentation at Le Crédac.

Crespo develops a singular language built from assemblages, experimental use of images, moulding techniques and the combination of industrial and organic materials. She intuitively perceives in everyday objects the free associations of forms they offer, stripping them of their function and meaning to retain only fragments. Tubes, shells and other elements are moulded, cast and reassembled into layered sculptures. Tenderness and gestures of care lie at the heart of this process, visible in the traces and imperfections she preserves.

Her work sets materials in dialogue, playing on dissonances to elicit sensitivity and poetry. The meaning of her practice appears only after the fact, resonating deeply with the exploration of the body. Fragmented and recomposed, the body is implicitly present in the abstract elements she constructs—in the tensions between rigidity and suppleness, falls and ascents, harshness and delicacy.
