Kehinde Wiley and Alexandre Diop

Acacias Art Center, 30, rue des Acacias, 75017

Kehinde Wiley becomes Alexandre Diop’s mentor for the exhibition, resulting from the 2022 mentorship at the Acacias Art Center during Paris + by Art Basel.

As part of the Reiffers Art Initiatives mentorship, he has accompanied the young French-Senegalese artist Alexandre Diop for several months. This exhibition is the result of this collaboration.

Kehinde Wiley is a famous African-American artist known for painting the official portrait of Barack Obama. Known for his naturalistic portraits of African-American men in heroic poses, Kehinde Wiley mixes classical and pop culture references in his works.

A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Alexandre Diop’s approach is between painting and sculpture, his creations combine different kinds of materials from everyday life. Related to the Italian arte povera movement, Diop’s work also explores the theme of African-American identity and is in line with artists such as his mentor Kehinde Wiley.
