Kenny Dunkan: No Apologies
"No Apologies" deepens the artist’s exploration of his Caribbean heritage.
Reiffers Art Initiatives, a foundation supporting young contemporary creation and cultural diversity, presents an exhibition by French artist Kenny Dunkan, with the mentorship of world-renowned artist Rashid Johnson.
French artist from Guadeloupe has pursued an in-depth dialogue with his mentor Rashid Johnson for several months. Nurtured by his exchanges with the famous Afro-American artist, Kenny Dunkan presents his exhibition at the opening of the FIAC, inviting the visitor to experience a mystical journey through three original immersive installations, as well as new sculptures, videos et photographs.
Each installation forms a microclimate depicting the cultural richness of Guadeloupe: from the aesthetic and symbolic power of carnival to mythologies and magical and religious beliefs. A way also for Kenny Dunkan to discuss the post-colonial heritage of his island. The body, a recurring theme of the artist who does not hesitate to stage his own black body, is also at the heart of his practice: a fragmented body, multiple and becoming.
