Lauren Halsey: Emajendat

Serpentine Galleries, Kensington Gardens, London W2 3XA, UK

Lauren Halsey’s first solo exhibition in the UK offers a dynamic exploration of culture, history, and community. Known for her maximalist installations, Halsey draws on her South Central LA upbringing to create immersive environments that are both visually striking and deeply rooted in her community’s stories and activism. Her work incorporates objects, signs, and symbols collected from her neighbourhood, remixing them into intricate assemblages that honour the spirit and resilience of Black culture.

Merging the past with the future, Halsey’s practice pulls inspiration from a range of influences, including ancient Egyptian iconography, the visual language of funk, and the lived experiences of Black and queer communities. Her art often takes the form of expansive architectural installations, offering viewers a vibrant blend of history, material culture, and imaginative storytelling.

Recent major projects, including work for The Met’s Roof Garden Commission and her installation at the Venice Biennale, reflect her growing interest in large-scale architectural forms. Halsey’s UK exhibition builds on these themes, offering audiences a powerful reflection on community, space, and empowerment, while gesturing towards her ultimate goal of creating public sculptures in her home neighbourhood. Through her work, Halsey continues to bridge art with social practice, reflecting the complexities and beauty of her community.
