Leandro Erlich: Entre temps
Xippas Gallery presents selection of works by Leandro Erlich, including several previously unseen pieces. The exhibition opens with Pulled by the roots BOG, a suspended house seemingly uprooted from the ground. The theme of roots and points of attachment continues in the Draft-Bazza series, which features typewriters covered in sand and displayed beneath glass domes. The works refer to earlier forms of communication and working methods while contrasting them with the digital technologies of today.
The central installation, Classroom, recreates a 1970s school classroom. Presented in a darkened space behind a large pane of glass, the room includes desks, chairs, a blackboard, maps and cupboards, with worn surfaces and a layer of dust suggesting a long-abandoned environment. Lighting effects incorporate visitors’ reflections into the installation, making their silhouettes appear within the classroom.
The work evokes memories of school and childhood while also addressing education and its role in society. The classroom is presented both as a place of learning and as a social environment where relationships are formed.
As in much of Erlich’s work, Classroom uses mirrors, trompe-l’œil and concealed structures to alter the viewer’s perception of familiar environments. By incorporating visitors into the works, Erlich creates installations in which the boundaries between the observed space and the viewer become less defined.
