Lee Bae
Perrotin presents Lee Bae’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery and his third in Paris, featuring new works from his Brushstrokes and Issu du feu series. A significant figure in the contemporary Korean art scene, Lee Bae has spent decades exploring the formal qualities of charcoal, combining elements of traditional Asian calligraphy with Western abstraction.
His monochromatic works explore the visual and material qualities of black. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, he has developed an abstract approach that examines depth, texture and intensity through the use of dark materials. His latest paintings on canvas and paper use charcoal ink to create spontaneous marks and gestures. These works record the movement involved in their making while reflecting on duration and the passage of time.
