Les marguerites Gaumont par Chassol
With an exhibition, a concert and a series of screenings at the Gaîté Lyrique, Chassol revisits Gaumont's cinematic heritage through music.
In 2003, Christophe Chassol – musician, composer and arranger – collaborated with Gaumont to create the musical theme for the famous daisy logo. Twenty years on, Chassol takes a contemporary look at the Gaumont catalogue with an exhibition, concert and series of screenings at La Gaîté Lyrique, somewhere between music and cinema.
Les Marguerites Gaumont par Chassol is a work made up of excerpts from fifteen films that Chassol has reworked, musicalised, arranged and edited into ‘ultrascores’. Using this technique – one of Chassol’s artistic signatures – each syllable is translated into a musical note. Dialogue becomes score, rhythm and melody. Speech becomes music. From Dîner de cons to OSS 117, le Caire nid d’espions via Camille redouble and Cuisine et Dépendances, Chassol invites us to (re)discover these legendary films from a unique and innovative perspective.
The title “Les Marguerites Gaumont” is a nod to the company’s founder Léon Gaumont, who decided in 1903 to use a daisy as his logo, as a tribute to his mother Marguerite Dupanloup. Since then, this attention to detail has been deeply rooted in the DNA of the famous company.
Echoing the exhibition, and continuing a long history of concerts at the Gaîté Lyrique, Chassol returns to the stage on 15 September to play the live version of Marguerites. To complement the exhibition, a series of meetings, screenings and workshops is planned.
