Liliana Porter: Almost There
Liliana Porter, one of Argentina’s most celebrated contemporary artists, consistently questions the boundary between reality and its representation. Through the humorous juxtaposition of incongruous objects, she distils life and art to their most essential forms, revealing complex truths with striking simplicity.
Over the years, Porter has assembled a vast and eccentric collection of figurines, toys, trinkets, and souvenirs gathered from her travels across the world. These kitsch objects feature prominently in her work, where their unexpected mise-en-scène invites political, philosophical and existential reflection. Each object embodies a specific era and carries a unique cultural and historical narrative.
Porter delights in manipulating time, history, and reality, blending them in a dialogue that unfolds within a seemingly timeless, undefined white space. Since relocating to New York in 1964, where she continues to live and work, she has been a central figure in the evolution of conceptual art. That same year, she co-founded the New York Graphic Workshop alongside artists Luis Camnitzer and José Guillermo Castillo, with the aim of redefining the boundaries of printmaking.
