Matthieu Laurette: une rétrospective dérivée (1993-2023)
The MAC VAL welcomes Matthieu Laurette for a retrospective exhibition that presents 30 years of artistic production and includes a set of new works and interventions.
A versatile artist who uses the entertainment industry as raw material and the media (television, internet, press…) as means of production and dissemination of his work. Since 1993, he has shifted the places of art production and exhibition to confront reality. Defining himself as multimedia – his works take on various forms: from televised interventions to installations to recent developments on Instagram – he develops numerous strategies of infiltration at the intersection of conceptual art, popular culture, institutional critique, economic reflections, and societal issues.
Matthieu Laurette uses existing mechanisms and contexts to create and insert his own works. He explores the complexity of the notion of value: of things, of the artist, of art, and of money; going so far as to make financial transactions the subject and material of his works. They question the place of art and the role of the artist in the era of generalized spectacle.
