The exhibition “Minimal” explores the international evolution of a movement that, since the early 1960s, has radically redefined the status of the artwork. Characterised by an economy of means, a stripped-down aesthetic and a reconsideration of the relationship between the work and the spectator, a generation of artists worldwide developed this approach, inviting direct physical interaction. “Minimal” thus emerged as a form of art that sought to address viewers directly through the presentation of universal materials and forms, bypassing imitation, symbolism or narrative.
Artists adopted both natural and industrial materials—often the simplest and most readily available—to create situations that directly engaged the body of the visitor while drawing attention to the very site of the exhibition. The artwork’s significance shifted from content to the lived experience it offered.
Structured around seven thematic sections—Light, Mono-ha, Balance, Surface, Grid, Monochrome, Materialism—the exhibition traces the variety of the movement’s expressions across different geographies: North America (Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Ryman), South America (Lygia Pape), Asia (Lee Ufan, Nobuo Sekine, Kishio Suga), the Middle East (Rasheed Araeen) and Europe (Gunther Uecker, François Morellet). The display features exceptional works drawn from the Pinault Collection, complemented by loans from the Dia Art Foundation and other public and private collections.
