Remember Me
“Remember Me” brings together around 700 works by more than 70 artists from the Pinault Collection at the Bourse de Commerce, marking the bicentenary of the invention of photography. Centred on photography’s relationship with memory, the exhibition presents a wide range of historical and contemporary images without following a chronological structure.
Conceived as a free-ranging journey, the exhibition creates unexpected correspondences between different genres, periods and approaches to the photographic medium. Works span the history of photography, from 19th-century images to contemporary practices, and highlight the diversity of its aesthetics and techniques. Artists include Gustave Le Gray, Dorothea Lange, Man Ray, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman and Wolfgang Tillmans, alongside Richard Avedon, Tyler Mitchell, Irving Penn and many others.
Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Remember Me) (1988/2020), a video work displayed on an LED panel in the museum’s Rotunda, gives the exhibition its title and provides a point of reference for its reflection on photography, memory and the passage of time. Together, the works consider photography as a medium capable of preserving faces, moments and experiences, connecting the present with what has passed.
