Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions
In this exhibition are presented Arthur Jafa's works of the past two decades
Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Rua Dom João de Castro 210
Arthur Jafa is a visual artist focusing on African-American identity and culture. His work’s aim is to reframe in a new context the matter through a visual-aesthetic including contemporary footage and found images. By re-performing these narratives in the present, Jafa imagines and constructs new possibilities for making them visible.
The exhibition’s “A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions” features the photographer Ming Smith; the Instagram feed of artist Frida Orupabo and content from the YouTube channel of Missylanyus.
The title refers to the feeling of emptiness, which, according to the author, is characteristic of the Black life.
