Joan Jonas
The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, dedicates a solo exhibition to the pioneer of performance, video and installation art Joan Jonas, whose five-decade career has been covering the most diverse interests, exploring movement, music, female identity, environment, natural and urban landscapes.
Jonas’ works often resorts to varied objects, like masks, mirrors and video screens to create complex layered images, conveying both poetic and political messages. The exhibition, organised with the artist’s supervision, explores her constant revisiting of earlier works and motifs. Reconfigurations of her earlier performative works “Mirror Check” (1970) and “Mirror Piece I & II: Reconstruction” (1969/2018-19) will take place respectively at the Library and Auditorium of the museum.
