Joan Miró, Alexander Calder: Space in motion
The exhibition "Joan Miró and Alexander Calder: Space in Motion" is a joint effort between the Serralves Foundation and Fundació Joan Miró, curated by Robert Lubar Messeri.
The artistic friendship and ongoing visual dialogue between Alexander Calder and Joan Miró, which began when they met in Paris in 1928 and continued until Calder‘s passing in 1976, stands as one of the most productive collaborations of the 20th century.
Their works have frequently been exhibited together, with Calder‘s mobiles, stabiles, and sculptures complementing the spatial qualities of Miró‘s paintings. Likewise, Miró‘s symbolic imagery and schematic figures enhance the implications of Calder’s sculptures in a two-dimensional space.
The exhibition features works by Joan Miró from the Portuguese State Collections, on loan to the Serralves Museum in Porto, along with a significant collection of pieces by both artists loaned by Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.
