Cinthia Marcelle: em-entre-para-perante

Cinthia Marcelle (b. 1974, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) presents, for her third solo show at Silvia Cintra + Box4, an installation composed of paintings and objects. On the walls, striped fabrics, whose black lines were painted white, hang from the ceiling, reminding a central courtyard of a prison in rebellion. On the floor there are a series of objects covered by black shoelaces – instruments that suggest, for the most part, tools used in scape situations. The visitor must walk through a narrow corridor and experience a game of oppositions between what’s above and what’s beneath, what’s uncovered and what’s veiled, what’s loose and what’s bound.

This exhibition departed from a desire by the artist to reflect about concepts like prison and escape, and to investigate the historic and symbolic space of Brazilian prisons from the point of view of the outsider, of the person that experience another kind of confinement: the economical, social and psychological boundaries of everyday life. The artist projects, from within this aesthetical exercise, a scape line.
