Gilvan Barreto: Suturas

Suturas [Sutures] gathers 25 works created during the last four years by Gilvan Barreto (b. 1973, Jaboatão do Guararapes, Brazil), including photographs, photo-collages and drawings, that suggest ruptures and attempts of reconstruction. Bodies, images and memories are reassembled and reunited by manual sewing. The exhibit also comprises a video and a sculpture.

Gilvan Barreto has been working as a photographer for more than two decades. He began his career with photojournalism and traditional documentary photography, and later expanded his interest towards the expanded possibilities of representation. His work is centered in political and social issues, as well in the relationship between man and nature. He has published three book: “Sobremarinhos” (2015), “O Livro do Sol” (Tempo D’Imagem, 2013) and “Moscouzinho” (Tempo D’Imagem, 2012).

The exhibition integrates Estúdio Madalena’s project Ponte Aérea.
