Francesca Leone: Can One Illuminate a Black and Miry Sky?
An artistic reflection on the universe, as confusing yet reassuring as it can be
Francesca Leone‘s latest solo show “Can One Illuminate a Black and Miry Sky?” is titled after Charles Baudelaire’s “Irreparable”, suggesting the main theme of the exhibition. This project is an assumption of disorientation and bewilderment, lacking clear and distinct benchmarks. Francesca Leone paints on recyclable metal sheets, creating a delicate yet bold painting style, full of references and stratifications, both material and symbolic.
The artist built an installation that occupies the entire main room of the gallery, stealing painting to its natural vertical dimension and turning it into a black and miry sky to look at. The metal sheets are deformed and become light and soft surfaces where the artist can write a page that time seems to have overlooked.
