Leiko Ikemura: Mia Mamma Roma
Tim Van Laere Gallery presents “Mia Mamma Roma”, the third solo exhibition by Leiko Ikemura. The exhibition includes a new series of paintings centred on her “Girls” motif, alongside sculptures.
Rome, the first city Ikemura visited after leaving Japan, holds a special connection for the artist. The exhibition’s title reflects her fascination with Italian cinema, particularly the films of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Visitors encounter film stills from “Mamma Roma” (1962), a story that echoes Ikemura’s focus on marginalised individuals and moral questions.
Ikemura’s Girls series, begun in the 1990s, critiques traditional portrayals of women in art. Delicate silhouettes in flowing colours evoke reflections on childhood, coming of age, and motherhood. These works are displayed with sculptures like “Mia Mamma Roma”, symbolising protection and creation.
Born in Japan and now based in Berlin, Ikemura’s five-decade career spans multiple cultures. Her works are featured in major collections worldwide, including Centre Pompidou and Museum Ludwig.
