Nicola Samorì: Le Ossa della Madre

Villa d'Este, Piazza Trento, 5, Tivoli (Rome)

Villa d’Este hosts “Le Ossa della Madre“, a solo exhibition by Nicola Samorì. The project is realized in collaboration with Galleria Monitor (Roma, Lisbona, Pereto), with the aim to create a bridge between museums and contemporary artists. Indeed, Villa d’Este is a renaissance villa – that once was the home of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este – full of suggestive glimpses, with which the artist set an intense dialogue.

Samorì‘s works constitute a mineral extension that assumes the “deformities” of the stone as it almost generates the pictorial narration of the Villa’s decoration. Samorì conceives stones as “le ossa della madre“, literally “Mother’s bones“, chosen to be in dialogue with the hosting space.

One of the most suggestive artworks displayed is “Solstice of Hell“, exhibited in the Sala di Noè, under the fresco that tells of the covenant pact following the Great Flood. The painting on onyx presents an apocalyptic vision of the sky – prelude to the imminent storm that dominates a legion of bodies in turmoil. What is interesting is that the shapes and the figures are not coming out of the paint, yet they are pre-existing in the prodigious natural mottling of the marble.
