Sol Calero: Sensory Spaces 15

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Museumpark 18-20

Within the series Sensory Spaces, artist Sol Calero created the installation “El Patio”, a setting inspired by the typical patios of Latin-American architectures. These place are an integrated part of social life, as they function as gathering spots, just as “El Patio” is conceived for visitors of the museum to relax or converse. The recreated place draws inspiration from the typical decorative motifs of Latin-American history of art, mixed with elements reinterpreted by the artist, while the palette of colours is directly influenced by Rubens’ oil works.

Calero’s interest relies in the influence of both renaissance and baroque movements on Latin-American art and the way in which one culture can assimilate an other, either forcefully or otherwise. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen of Rotterdam, then, becomes the proper set for the artist’s installation, thanks to its extensive collections of old masters, including masterpieces by baroque artists such as Peter Paul Rubens. Calero’s work perfectly responds to the increasing attention devoted in recent years by art professionals to the influence this artist had on Latin-American art.
