Pierre Verger: As Aventuras de Pierre Verger

Museu Afro Brasil, Pedro Alvares Cabral Ave, Parque Ibirapuera

Museu Afro Brasil and Pierre Verger Foundation present the exhibition As Aventuras de Pierre Verger [The Adventures of Pierre Verger]. Curated by Alex Baradel, responsible for the Foundation’s collection, the show is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions produced by the institution that was created by Pierre Verger (1902, Paris, France – 1996, Salvador, Brazil) himself in Bahia, the place he chose to spend the rest of his life after travelling the world photographing typical manifestations and the everyday life of several cultures.

Divided in nine sectors – Paris, Travels, Polynesia, Sahara, China, Peru, Africa, Project and Educative –, the exhibit gathers around 270 images captures by Verger all over the world, and highlights the intersections between photography and video, artisanal fabric from different countries and sequential arts. In total, there are 220 images exhibited along the exhibition circuit, plus additional 50 that are part of displayed videos. Eleven illustrations by artist Bruno Marcello (Bua) complete the show, portraying Verger in important episodes of his life.

As Aventuras de Pierre Verger was conceived as a way to approach Verger’s work to the general public, including children and teenagers. It creates a parallel between Hergé’s “The Adventures of Tintin” and the work of the photographer, ethnologist and babalaô (a priest of the Yoruba religion), whose photos are also the memories of a remarkable century, marked by inventions, an increasing knowledge of the world and world wars.
