Bruno Moreschi: Sala de Leitura
Begun in 2012 and completed in 2014, the art project “Art Book” is the result of a study by Bruno Moreschi on visual and textual patterns that are found in various books on art history.
In this exhibition, the artist has expanded its research and presents for the first time not only a place to read his “Art Book”, but also a mosaic composed of more than 700 images, which are the reference for the creation of the encyclopedia. The exhibition not only shows images of works of art, but also the most various visual content in the books that spread in social networks, in the urban context, in advertising, journalism, etc..
By collecting these images Moreschi creates a kind of schizophrenic narrative, the mainreference for his installation are visual searches of the German historian Aby Warburg, who, between 1924 and 1929, he created his “Mnemosyne Atlas”, a collection of images from different eras arranged for visual approaches.
As well as studies of Warburg, “Sala de Leitura” is presented as an attempt to build a history of art notfrom the authors, but a story of the eye in which images from different roots approach to vision.
“Art Book” launches the attention on two basic issues: the procedures for the construction of art history and processes of legitimation, “In this sense, the project allows us to understand the historical document as a device neutral and impartial,” says Priscila Arantes, technical director and curator of Paço das Artes.
